Newark's High School Graduation Rate: DOE Releases 2015 Totals

Newark, NJ – What percentage of Newark high school students managed to earn their high school diplomas last year?

The New Jersey Department of Education released the latest graduation rate totals on Wednesday, reporting that the state’s high school graduation rate rose to 89.7 percent in 2015 from 88.6 percent in 2014.

This is the fourth straight year that New Jersey’s high school graduation rate has increased, and the third consecutive year in which it grew by at least a full percentage point, DOE officials stated in a news release.

“The graduation rate is defined as the percent of students who graduated from secondary school with a regular diploma in the standard number of years, which in most cases is four but could be three or two,” the DOE states on its website.

“Students who graduate in less than four years are counted with the students in their assigned four-year cohort, not in the year when they actually graduate,” the website explains. “Students who have dropped out of school and undocumented transfers must remain in the cohort number but will not count as graduates.”

NEWARK’S HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION RATE

Here is the Newark Public School District’s four-year, high school graduation totals, according to the DOE:

  • 2015 - 69.59 percent
  • 2014 - 68.63 percent
  • 2013 - 67.7 percent
  • 2012 – 68.72 percent
