NJ-10 Special Primary Election Results: McIver Wins Dem Race, AP Says

Voters in New Jersey's 10th District have been without a voice in Congress since the death of U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr.

NEW JERSEY — LaMonica McIver has triumphed in the Democratic Party race for a special primary election to replace the late U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr. in New Jersey, the Associated Press is projecting.

Voters in New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District went to the polls on Tuesday for a special primary election. Residents of the district are currently without a voice in the U.S. House of Representatives following Payne's death in April. See Related: Mourning Continues For NJ Congressman With ‘Big Heart’

Gov. Phil Murphy announced that a special election will be held to fill the rest of Payne’s unexpired term. A primary election was held to choose Democratic and Republican nominees on July 16. The winners and any independent candidates will face off again on Sept. 18 in the general election. A full term will be up for grabs in the general election on Nov. 5.

ELECTION RESULTS

The only Republican candidate appearing on the ballot in Tuesday’s primary election was Carmen Bucco, who ran unopposed for the GOP nod.

On the flip side, a large field of candidates competed for the Democratic Party nomination. The Associated Press has called the race in favor of LaMonica McIver, although the results remain uncertified. See Related: LaMonica McIver Of Newark Claims Big Primary Election Win In NJ-10

New Jersey's 10th Congressional District includes the following municipalities:

  • Essex County – Caldwell, East Orange, Essex Fells, Irvington, Montclair (part), Newark (part), Orange, Verona, West Orange
  • Hudson County – Jersey City (part)
  • Union County – Cranford, Garwood, Hillside, Kenilworth, Linden (part), Roselle, Roselle Park, Union Township
