NJIT Student On Bike Struck By Construction Vehicle, Dies: ECPO

The construction vehicle was operated by NJ Transit.

A New Jersey college student was killed this week when a construction vehicle collided with his vehicle, according to authorities.

The bicyclist, Kevin Milfort-Sanchez, 20, of Paterson was killed in a collision with an excavation vehicle operated by NJ Transit in Newark on Wednesday evening, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

Milfort-Sanchez was a student at NJIT in Newark.

The accident happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. when Newark police officers were dispatched to the area of McCarter Highway and Gouverneur Street on a report of a motor vehicle collision, according to the ECPO.

Police determined that the construction vehicle was travelling north on McCarter Highway when it collided with the bicycle, according to the ECPO.

Milfort-Sanchez was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:10 p.m., according to the ECPO. The driver of the construction vehicle remained in the area of the collision scene.

This incident is being investigated by detectives from the Prosecutor’s Crime Scene Investigations Bureau and the Newark and NJ Transit Police Departments. No charges have been filed at this time and the investigation is continuing.
