NJ Man Beat Girlfriend At Party In Newark, Convicted Of Assault

The domestic violence began with a verbal fight, but soon escalated into punches, kicks and being slammed against a wall, prosecutors said.

NEWARK, NJ — An Essex County jury found a Newark resident guilty of aggravated assault on Thursday after he beat his girlfriend and caused her “significant bodily injury” at a party almost four years ago, prosecutors said.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the domestic violence took place when Ahmir Worthy, 29, and his 23-year-old girlfriend were at a party in Newark in August 2019.

“The two argued verbally, after which Worthy punched, kicked and slammed her against the wall multiple times. She was taken to St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, and later to University Hospital, where she was treated for a concussion, contusions and deep bruising.”

After a three-day trial, a jury convicted Worthy of third-degree aggravated assault. When he is sentenced on June 26, Worthy faces up to five years in state prison, prosecutors said.

Assistant Prosecutor Monica Calderon, who tried the case, thanked the victim for her “bravery in coming forward and testifying.”
