N.J. Man Gets 10 Years For Fatally Shooting Newark Teenager

The 26-year-old Newark man had no criminal record prior to the fatal shooting, prosecutors say.

Newark, NJ – An Essex County man was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Friday for fatally shooting a Newark teenager in 2012.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, a Superior Court judge sentenced Rasoo Scott, 26, of Newark, to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison for fatally shooting Daniel Ebron-Berbick, 16, also of Newark.

According to prosecutors, around 3 p.m. on Sept. 1, 2012, Ebron-Berbick got into a physical altercation with Scott on the 200 block of Fairmont Avenue in Newark.

He has been in custody since the shooting and will receive credit for that time served, prosecutors stated.

“The defendant’s senseless use of a gun in this case elevated a street fight into a fatal confrontation’’ said Assistant Prosecutor Nicole Buermann, who handled the case. “The plea agreement took into account the underlying facts of the case, as well as the fact that the defendant had no prior contact with the criminal justice system as a juvenile or an adult.”
