NJ Man Jumps From Third-Story Window To Escape Cops, Found Guilty

An Essex County man leaped out of a window in a failed escape attempt, seriously injuring himself in the process, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — An Essex County jury recently convicted a man who jumped out of a third-story window in an attempt to escape the police, prosecutors announced Tuesday.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Hanzha Darby, 36, of Newark, was found guilty of fourth-degree resisting arrest by flight on April 16.

The incident took place in May 2024, when Newark police officers went to an apartment on the 200-block of Irvine Turner Boulevard to arrest Darby on an outstanding warrant.

Darby jumped out of a third-floor window to evade arrest, sustaining serious injures when he landed, authorities said.

Darby is scheduled for sentencing on June 2. He faces up to 18 months in state prison, prosecutors said.
