Man Stabbed 10 Times And Lives; Essex County Jury Returns Verdict (Here's What They Said)

A Newark man "ambushed" a victim, chased him down the street and stabbed him several times in East Orange, prosecutors said.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — An Essex County jury recently convicted a Newark man on multiple charges after he “ambushed” a victim, chased him down the street and stabbed him more than 10 times in East Orange, authorities say.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, a jury found Dwayne Barbour, 34, of Newark, guilty of aggravated assault and weapons offenses in connection with a stabbing that took place in 2022.

“On May 4, 2022, Barbour waited for 31-year-old Daren Brooks with a knife at an address in East Orange and ambushed him upon his arrival. The victim ran down the street to escape the attack and the defendant followed. Ultimately, the defendant caught up to him and stabbed him over 10 times.”

The jury returned a guilty verdict against Barbour on April 4 following a three-week trial.

Barbour faces 5 to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison. Under the No Early Release Act, He must serve 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.

Barbour is scheduled for sentencing in May.

Essex County prosecutors thanked the East Orange Police Department and the Essex County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance with the investigation.

“I would like to commend the victim for his strength in surviving this attack, as well as all members of law enforcement and the community who came together to assist him,” said Assistant Prosecutor Dana Kutzleb, who tried the case along with Marco Collemi.
