In the Democratic Party race, U.S. Rep. Andy Kim (NJ-3) faced a challenge from two longtime Garden State activists and community leaders: Lawrence Hamm and Patricia Campos-Medina. Other Democratic candidates previously included New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy, who suspended her Senate campaign in March.
On the flip side of the aisle, four Republican candidates competed for the party nod: South Jersey entrepreneur Curtis Bashaw, U.S. navy veteran Albert Harshaw, Mendham Borough mayor Christine Serrano Glassner, and former Tabernacle mayor Justin Murphy.
Here are the latest election results as per the Associated Press, which remain uncertified:
DEMOCRAT (with 42 percent of votes counted)
- Andy Kim – 193,708 votes (78%)
- Patricia Campos-Medina – 36,327 votes (14.6%)
- Lawrence Hamm – 18,153 votes (7.3%)
Andy Kim is being projected as the winner, according to the AP.
"Our win today is a stunning victory for a people-powered movement that mobilized against corruption and stood up to the machine politics of New Jersey," Kim said in a statement declaring victory on Tuesday night.
"I took the chance to run for Senate eight months ago on the belief that people are fed up with our broken politics and are ready for a new generation of leadership fighting for change," Kim said. "What I found is that there is a deep hunger across the political spectrum for a different kind of politics grounded in integrity and public service that aims to rebuild trust."
REPUBLICAN (with 41 percent of votes counted)
The Associated Press has projected Curtis Bashaw as the winner of the Republican primary.
- Curtis Bashaw – 79,414 votes (55.7%)
- Christine Serrano Glassner – 41,410 votes (29%)
- Justin Murphy – 15,285 votes (10.7)
- Albert Harshaw – 6,495 votes (4.5%)
“Tonight is the start of real change, because our state and country are at a crossroads,” Bashaw said Tuesday evening.
“We will take the battle to Andy Kim and the Democrats,” he continued. “From Sussex to Salem, from Hudson to Hunterdon, from Bergen to Burlington. We will work together, and fight together to defeat the entrenched Democrat monopoly.”
