NJ Storm: Fatal Crash, Flooding, Wind Advisory

Even as the weather improves, New Jersey is still battling with the after-effects of a major storm that passed through.

The sun may be out in parts of New Jersey, but the state is still battling the after effects of a major storm that passed through the region on Sunday and Monday morning.

Thousands lost power, streets flooded and at there was at least one fatal crash reported on the New Jersey Turnpike in the two-day storm. Winds reached 45 to 60 mph in some parts as nearly 4 inches of rain fell.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory that's in effect until noon. Here are the details:

  • WINDS: West 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.
  • TIMING: Winds will continue to increase early this morning, peaking from around dawn to the late morning hours, before decreasing around mid-day.
  • IMPACTS: Strong winds may blow down limbs, trees, and power lines. Scattered power outages are expected.

Here is what happened so far:

  • State Police reported that at least one person was killed in crash on the New Jersey Turnpike Sunday. A motorcycle collided with a sedan on the wet road on the southbound side in East Brunswick. The accident happened around 11 p.m. but no one involved has been identified.
  • A water main break flooded neighborhoods in Newark on Monday morning. The break happened on North 5th Street shortly around 4:45 a.m. and emergency crews were still dealing with the excess water and continued flooding.
  • Nearly 10,000 homes were without power in Morris County Monday morning, following a weekend nor'easter. As of 10:11 a.m., that number was down to 2,890 homes. Read more here...
  • The strong storm brought down power lines, and knocked out electricity to more than 5,700 homes and businesses in Ocean County, according to Jersey Central Power & Light. The outages were scattered, with small outages in Brick, Lakewood, Toms River and Jackson. Read more here...
  • Roadways in other parts of the state also flooded, including Long Beach Island. Long Beach Township police said Long Beach Boulevard was closed from 31st Street to 91st Street as of 9 p.m. on Sunday. "Please use caution and drive slowly," according to a Nixle alert. Read more here...

  • Accident: A crash was reported on Route 73, slowing traffic in both directions at Route 609/Stiles Avenue/Princeton Avenue in Maple Shade. Left lanes were closed, causing a 10-15 minute delay.
  • Accident: A crash was reported on Route 18 northbound south of Exit 22 - Route 537/Colts Neck Road in Colts Neck. Right shoulder was closed, so use caution.
  • Accident: A crash was reported on the Garden State Parkway, with injuries, on the southbound north of Exit 6 in Middle Township. All lanes blocked.
