NJ Thief Stole Car With Baby Inside, Still At Large: Essex County Cops
A thief stole a car with a 3-month-old baby inside in Irvington. It was later found abandoned in Newark, authorities said.
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — The person who stole a car with an infant still in the back seat on Tuesday night in Irvington is still at large, according to the Essex County Sheriff’s Office.
Irvington police put out a call for aid to Child Abduction Response Patrol Units and other nearby municipalities in Essex County at 8:09 p.m. after a gold Mercedes Benz SUV was stolen on the 100-block of Clinton Avenue – with a 3-month-old baby inside, authorities said.
Essex County sheriff’s officers found the vehicle – which had a Texas license plate – abandoned in the South Ward of Newark at 10:51 p.m., authorities said.

The baby was “awake and alert,” and was taken to University Hospital in Newark for precautionary evaluation, police said.
The car thief fled the scene after abandoning the vehicle and is still at large, authorities said Wednesday afternoon. No arrests have been made.

A police investigation continues, authorities said. No additional information about the suspect was immediately available.

Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura credited the involved agencies for “exemplary police work,” including his own office, U.S. Homeland Security, the Irvington Police Department, the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
