NJ Transit Riders Report Delays On Day 4 Of 'Summer Of Hell'
They wanted trains that ran on time. Instead, they got bottles of water to drink while they waited.

HOBOKEN, NJ — They wanted trains that ran on time. Instead, they got bottles of water to drink while they waited.
That’s the scenario that NJ Transit riders reported at Hoboken Terminal on Thursday evening, the fourth day after the dreaded “Summer of Hell” Amtrak repairs at New York Penn Station kicked off.

Several commuters reported via social media that multiple trains were delayed or canceled on the Morris and Essex line throughout the evening.
You have had at least 4 consecutive M&E trains out of HOB delayed or cancelled so far this evening & the night is young

This summer’s much-heralded Amtrak repairs at New York Penn Station – dubbed the “Summer of Hell” – is expected to create serious delays for NJ Transit and Long Island Railroad passengers. All three of those rail lines have significant changes planned during the repairs, which are expected to last until September.

But contrary to warnings from transportation officials and many experts, most riders reported smooth sailing throughout the week as they traveled from New Jersey to New York or vice versa.

However, the week’s relatively smooth ride may have hit a hiccup on Thursday.
TONIGHTS M&E COMMUTE = COMPLETE FAIL. If you cancel trains you need to make it up. You can't sub a 3 car train in for a 7 car double-decker.

Sardine room only on M&E line tonight. All the way from HOB to Madison. 3 cars on #645 to replace 7 dbl-decker cars on #6641. #NJTransitFail

As a gesture of goodwill and sympathy, NJ Transit sent its team of customer assistance reps out with free bottles of water for the delayed passengers in Hoboken.

It was a gesture that several riders described as a slap in the face.

Free water to go with your 20% fare hike ? There had better be layoffs before you raise fares again.

You have staff to hand out water but no "crew" to run nearly four Morristown trains. Then u post on twitter to try to look good..? Laughable

Why don't you use some of the water to wash your filthy trains

However, despite the obvious frustration from their peers, some NJ Transit riders also said that their fellow passengers should lighten up and roll with the punches.
One rider described their peers’ comments as “21st century, cry baby adults’ stupid complaints.”
"For what it's worth, I think that you guys have done a great job so far accommodating those of us on the M&E line," another rider wrote on Facebook. "As well, the conductors I've known have been really great and some of them have taken abuse they don't deserve. Don't get discouraged. Your service in general has been excellent. We believe in you guys and we're counting on you."
