NJ Truck Driver Dies In High-Speed Crash In Newark: Authorities

A man driving a box truck ran into the back of a tractor trailer. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Essex County authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A North Jersey man died after his truck collided with the back of a tractor trailer earlier this week in Newark, authorities said.

On Tuesday, Roy Thomas, 55, of Bergenfield was killed in a fatal motor vehicle collision on the southbound lane of Route 1 and 9 in Newark, near the Kearny border.

The driver of the tractor trailer remained at the scene. No one has been charged, according to a joint statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Department of Public Safety.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that Thomas, the driver of a box truck, ran into the back of the tractor trailer at a high rate of speed,” prosecutors said.

Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:03 a.m.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is investigating the fatal crash, authorities said Thursday.
