NJIT Holding DWI Checkpoint At Newark Campus
The checkpoint will be set up on Friday evening and Saturday morning – here's where.
NEWARK, NJ — The Department of Public Safety at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will conduct a driving while intoxicated checkpoint on a street along the south side of the university's Newark campus during the evening of Friday, Oct. 25 and early morning of Saturday, Oct. 26.
According to a news release from NJIT, the operation will “serve as a specific deterrent by arresting impaired drivers who pass through the checkpoint and, more importantly, as a general deterrent to persons who have knowledge of the checkpoint.”

“The research is clear on the effect that highly visible enforcement has on deterring impaired driving: when drivers perceive the risk of being caught is high, their behavior changes immediately, according to Lt. Javier Duenas, a patrol and traffic commander at NJIT Public Safety. This is the basis of the state’s ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ initiative.”
“The message is simple, direct, relevant and it works, having already influenced many citizens nationwide not to drink and drive,” Duenas said. “As always, the safety and security of NJIT's campus and community is paramount.”
