NYC Man Broke Into Newark Church, 3 Stores: Police

Newark police arrested a NYC resident who allegedly broke into a local church, beauty supply shop, chicken restaurant and a clothing store.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark police have arrested a New York City resident who allegedly broke into a local church, beauty supply shop, chicken restaurant and a clothing store.

On Friday, Newark police arrested Maurice Edwards, 61, of New York City, on the 700-block of Broad Street. Authorities charged him with four counts each of burglary, theft and criminal mischief. He was also wanted on two outstanding warrants, the Newark Department of Public Safety stated.

  • “At approximately 2:20 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, police responded to the [Old First Presbyterian Church at 820 Broad Street] on a burglary alarm. The suspect fled after stealing food and drinks. Detectives of the 3rd Precinct identified Edwards as a suspect.”
  • “On Sunday, Aug. 12, police responded to the [Beauty Supplies Store at 183 Market Street] where the owner reported that a burglary had occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. and that $400 was stolen. Detectives of the 3rd Precinct also identified Edwards as a suspect in this incident.”
  • “On Sunday, Aug. 12, police responded to the [Crown Royal Chicken and Biscuit at 181 Market Street] where the owner reported that a suspect had broken in and had stolen approximately $400 from the business. Edwards was identified by detectives as a suspect in this burglary.”
  • “In the overnight hours of Thursday, Aug. 16 and Friday, Aug. 17 the Rainbow Shop clothing store at 756 Broad Street was broken into. Detectives investigating this incident identified Edwards as a suspect in this incident.”
