Olympic Champ Visits Newark School To Encourage Reading
New Jersey native and U.S. Olympic gold medalist Laurie Hernandez visited Lafayette Street School in Newark to encourage kids to read.

NEWARK, NJ — New Jersey native and U.S. Olympic gold medalist Laurie Hernandez is a gymnastics champion. But did you know that she’s also a literary champ, too?
Earlier this month, Hernandez read to students at Newark Public Schools Lafayette Street School, as part of “WE Read Together” a reading initiative that stresses the importance of reading and reward them with certificates for meeting reading goals.
Hernandez and members of Lafayette Street School’s Citizenship Team hosted a school assembly with 2nd and 3rd graders before the Olympian visited three classrooms to read her book. The reading program is sponsored in part by KPMG, who has conducted the program with NPS for the last 10 years, according to school administrators.
