Passenger Opens Emergency Door On United Flight At Newark Airport

Port Authority police arrested a man after he allegedly opened an emergency exit aboard a United Airlines flight set to leave for Florida.

NEWARK, NJ — Port Authority police arrested a resident of Micronesia after he allegedly opened an emergency exit aboard a United Airlines flight set to leave Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport around 10 p.m. on Sunday.

A United Airlines spokesperson told NJ.com that the passenger “departed the aircraft using the [emergency] slide.”

The plane, which was bound for Tampa, Florida, continued onward after a four-hour delay with no injuries to crew or passengers, a Port Authority spokesperson said.

Troy G. Fattun, 25, was aboard United flight 1640 when he allegedly opened the plane’s emergency exit, deploying the escape chute, authorities said.

Port Authority police arrested Fattun on the tarmac of the airport, officials said.

Police charged Fattun with Criminal Mischief, Criminal Trespass and Interference with Transportation. He was transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility.
