Patch Readers' Choice: Hobby's Voted Top Deli in Newark

No surprise here: got the nod for best deli in Newark in this week's Readers' Choice poll.

New Jersey's own version of landmark Carnegie Deli across the Hudson River, Hobby's is a typical Jewish deli serving up hot and cold favorites to businessmen, devoted patrons and residents who flock to the restaurant at lunchtime.

While our other Readers' Choice polls tanked, choosing a favorite deli seemed to have struck a chord with Newark Patch readers. After all, who doesn't love fresh cold cuts piled high and topped with lettuce and tomato on a simple soft roll.

It could be the heaping sandwich platters, the creamy, homemade macaroni and cheese, or the generous jar of fresh pickles on every table that makes Hobby's a destination. The family-owned deli on Branford Place started in 1962 is now an institution for one of the best lunches in Newark. (Our favorites are the Greek platter and matzo ball soup.)

"Hobby's is the best, but there are other good ones in the city too," commented reader Dave Phillips.

While Bragman's Delicatessen on Hawthorne Avenue came in second, Patch readers also chimed in other top sandwich shops: Hero King on West Market Street for their heaping portions and Cooper's Deli on Orange Street for a great corned beef and pastrami sandwich.
