Pedestrian Killed In Newark; Driver Accused Of Leaving Scene: ECPO

A driver allegedly left the scene of a crash after hitting a pedestrian with his car in Newark, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A driver has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash after allegedly hitting a pedestrian with his car in Newark on Sunday, authorities said.

Newark police responded to the 600-block of Springfield Avenue around 1:30 a.m. after getting a report that a car hit a pedestrian, according to a statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Department of Public Safety.

Emergency responders rushed the victim – Corey J. Claybrook, 53, of Newark – to University Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 2:27 a.m.

According to prosecutors, the driver – Ahmed Bouda, 29, of Newark – appeared to have left the area after the crash. Newark police located him a short time after the collision.

Authorities charged Bouda with death by auto, leaving the scene of a crash, and failure to render aid to an injured victim. He is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility pending a court appearance.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Crime Scene Investigations Bureau, which includes detectives from the Newark Fire Department, is investigating the crash. Authorities said anyone with information can contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s tip line at 877-847-7432.
