Department puts emergency response vehicles on display at Military Park
Newark Police Department's biggest and baddest crime-fighting technology was on display this week for National Police Week, which coincides with National Peace Officers Memorial Day celebrated each year on May 15.
From Tuesday through Thursday, police gear like the department's Segways, Zodiac emergency rescue boat, mobile precinct unit and even Brick City's own Batmobile – along with the – were on display from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Military Park. Officers from the department's narcotics and gangs and community affairs units, as well as officials from Homeland Security, gave out pamphlets with crime prevention tips. An estimated 3,000 Newark residents came through the annual exposition, according to police.
Capping Newark's observation of Police Week is the department's annual awards ceremony and memorial service Friday at 11 a.m. at city hall. Officers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty will be honored for their hard work by Mayor Cory Booker and Police Director Samuel DeMaio. After the awards, officers will march to the police memorial on Green Street to pay tribute to officers killed in the line of duty.

This year, President Barack Obama honored three police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty during the annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Service on Capitol Hill. The memorial service began in 1982, when 120 members and supporters of law enforcement gathered at Senate Park. It has since grown to thousands of attendees and spawned National Police Week, which is celebrated this year from May 13-19.
