Teen Who Allegedly Robbed, Shot Elderly Man Turns Himself in to Police

Charged with robbery, aggravated assault, weapons offenses

A Newark teen wanted for shooting a 64-year-old man during a robbery Saturday in the city turned himself in to police Tuesday morning, according to authorities.

Darnel Williams, 18, was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, according to Det. Eugenio Gonzalez, a police spokesman.

Gonzalez said Williams robbed and then shot the elderly Newark man on Chapel Street around 10:30 a.m. The man, whose name was not released, apparently suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

"With the commitment by the detectives of the police department, along with the help of the community, led to the arrest of the suspect involved in this shooting," said Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio in a statement.

Gonzalez said Williams walked into the police department's Fugitive Apprehension Unit in downtown Newark around 10:30 a.m.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker credited the apprehension to community support.

"I commend the excellence of our detectives and the support of our community in apprehending a suspect in this shooting incident," he said in a statement. "We will not eradicate crime in Newark simply by arresting people — we will eliminate it through the courage of our police officers, the unity of our residents and the commitment of both to transform Newark and build a stronger, prouder, and safer city."
