Newark Man Arrested After Allegedly Found with Loaded Handgun
Incident happened in Newark's Central Ward
A 41-year-old Newark man is in custody Thursday after police disrupted an apparent drug deal, pulled the man over in his car and found a loaded handgun, according to authorities.
Newark Det. Hubert Henderson, a police spokesman, said Daniel Corprew was charged with weapons offenses and motor vehicle violations.
The incident started Thursday morning when officers apparently witnessed a drug deal involving Corprew and other men near 178 Court St. in Newark's Central Ward. As officers approached the group, the men dispersed and Corprew went into a car and sped off, according to Henderson. As Corprew fled, he allegedly threw an item from the car.

Henderson said officers then stopped the car and witnessed Corprew place "something" in his waist. The officers then asked Corprew to exit the car, according to the detective. He said that's when officers noticed the loaded gun.
The item thrown from the car was not recovered, according to Henderson.

"Due to the alert actions of the two officers effecting Corprew's arrest, another illegal gun has been taken off our city streets and out of the hands of this criminal," said Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio in a statement.
Henderson said Corprew is in Essex County jail. He did not have information about bail.
