NJ Teens Crash Stolen Car Following Police Chase On NJ Turnpike: Police

A police chase involving a vehicle carjacked in Newark ended with a crash in Paterson. Troopers found two guns in the car, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A police chase involving a vehicle carjacked in Newark ended with a crash in Paterson on Sunday, authorities said.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, officers first spotted a vehicle reported carjacked in the city around 12:20 p.m. at Hunterdon and Renner avenues.

The vehicle led police on a chase that continued onto the New Jersey Turnpike, Newark authorities said.

After getting a “be on the lookout” alert from Newark police, troopers with the New Jersey State Police soon picked up the chase on the northbound portion of the turnpike. The driver ignored the troopers’ flashing lights and sounding sirens and continued north onto I-80 west, taking exit 58B to Madison Avenue in Paterson, a state police spokesperson said.

The chase continued to Madison Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard, ending when the driver failed to stop at a red light and crashed, police said.

Police arrested four juveniles; minor injuries were reported, state police said.

After searching the car, troopers found two 9mm handguns, a high-capacity magazine and hollow-point ammunition, state police said.

The arrestees – a 15-year-old male, two 14-year-old males and a 16-year-old male – are all Newark residents. They were each charged with two counts of possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, two counts of unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of hollow-point ammunition, possession of high-capacity magazine, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number and eluding, authorities said.

The juveniles were transported to the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center.
