Police Recover Drugs, Two Guns While Executing Warrants
Two arrests happened on 1st Street
A search warrant and arrest warrant executed simultaneously on two 1st Street apartments Monday morning in Newark led police to discover two loaded handguns and envelopes filled with heroin, according to officials.
Around 5:30 a.m., detectives from the Newark Police Department Gang and Narcotics Unit served the search warrant on an apartment located on the 14th floor of 175 1st Street, according to Det. Eugenio Gonzalez, a police spokesman.
He said officers found Omar McKinnon, 30, in possession of 170 envelopes of heroin, materials used to package narcotics, and a FEG Hungary .380 caliber gun loaded with hollow-point bullets.

Meanwhile, detectives from the department's Fugitive Apprehension Unit executed an arrest warrant at an apartment located on the 13th floor of 195 1st Street. There, the officers found Travis Odom, 37, in possession of a loaded Glock 10mm gun.
McKinnon was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS within 1000 feet of a school, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

Odom was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
"I commend these officers, whose bold action apprehended these suspects and thank all of the members of our police department who are risking their lives every day to make our neighborhoods safer," Newark Mayor Cory Booker said in a statement.
Gonzalez said McKinnon and Odom are in Essex County jail. The detective had no information about bail.
