Update: Payne, Pinckney Win NJ-10 Congress Race, AP Says
U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr. faced challenges from Imani Oakley and Akil Khalfani. David Pinckney squared off against Garth Stewart.

NEW JERSEY — Voters in New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District went to the polls on Tuesday to cast ballots in the 2022 primary election. Polls closed at 8 p.m.; check back here for updates.
Like others across the state, residents in parts of Essex, Hudson and Union counties cast ballots for a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, among other Election Day choices. The winners of the primary will secure their party's nomination for the general election, which takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

The winner will match up in November against one of two Republicans: David Pinckney, a public school teacher who has captured the county lines and previously lost the general election to Payne in 2016, or Garth Stewart, a self-described “political outsider” who ran on a platform of gun rights and ending coronavirus mandates.
The 10th district includes the following municipalities:
- Essex – Caldwell, East Orange, Essex Fells, Irvington, Montclair (part), Newark (part), Orange, Verona, West Orange
- Hudson – Jersey City (part)
- Union – Cranford, Garwood, Hillside, Kenilworth, Linden (part), Roselle, Roselle Park, Union Township
DEMOCRATIC PARTY RESULTS
The Associated Press (AP) has declared Payne the winner of the Democratic Party race, NPR reported. The National Election Pool has also declared Payne the victor, NBC News reported.
Payne's campaign team declared victory on Tuesday night.
"This is a victory for the hardworking men and women of the 10th District who showed that they demand experienced, effective leadership that puts their needs first and always shows up for them, and that’s exactly what I have always strived to deliver as their congressman,” Payne said.
With an estimated 35.5 percent of votes counted, here are the uncertified results as per the AP:
- Donald Payne Jr. – 17,162 votes (83.1%)
- Imani Oakley – 2,210 votes (10.7%)
- Akil Khalfani – 1,289 votes (6.2%)
REPUBLICAN PARTY RESULTS
The AP and the National Election Pool have both declared Pinckney the winner of the Republican race.
With an estimated 43.9 percent of votes counted, here are the uncertified results, according to the AP:
- David Pinckney – 1,987 votes (82.4%)
- Garth Stewart – 425 votes (17.6%)
