Prison Inmate Escaped Custody At Newark Hospital, Officials Say

He has since been apprehended and is back in custody, Essex County authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A prison inmate temporarily escaped from custody at a hospital in Newark on Wednesday evening, authorities said.

The escape took place after the inmate was arrested and brought to University Hospital to be treated for a medical issue that he was experiencing prior to being apprehended, a spokesperson for Essex County told Patch.

The inmate was slated to be processed into the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark. But he managed to give law enforcement officers the slip while at the hospital, authorities said.

He has since been apprehended and is back in custody, authorities said Thursday.
