Inmate Dies At Newark’s Northern State Prison: Authorities

Authorities are conducting an investigation after an inmate died while in custody at Northern State Prison in Newark.

NEWARK, NJ — Authorities are conducting an investigation after an inmate died while in custody at Northern State Prison in Newark last weekend.

A spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Corrections (DOC) confirmed that authorities found a male inmate lifeless in his cell around 9 p.m. on Saturday and pronounced him dead about 30 minutes later.

Authorities withheld the inmate's identify pending notification of his next of kin.

The DOC spokesman stated that the cause of death was under investigation and declined to release any additional information.

According to the New Jersey Department of Corrections, Northern State Prison is located on 43 acres in Newark and houses a “diverse offender population” in General Population, Special Needs, Administrative Close Supervision units (inmates who have incurred serious disciplinary charges) and Therapeutic Community units (addictive behaviors).

Community service activities are available to minimum security inmates, according to the state website.
