Proposed Newark City Budget Would Mean Tax Increase For Homeowners
Property taxes in Newark are made up of three parts: municipal, school and county. Voters approved the school budget earlier this year.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark’s City Council has introduced its proposed 2022 municipal budget, which would mean a tax increase of nearly $100 for the average homeowner if it passes.
Last weekend, the council held departmental budget hearings for the city’s annual spending plan, which includes $798.91 million in general appropriations (watch the video and see more details below).
A home with an assessed value of $182,436 would pay about $3,634 in municipal taxes, an increase of $97 from last year, NJ.com reported.

Property taxes in New Jersey are made up of three parts: school, municipal and county. Here's how that broke down in Newark last year, according to state statistics:
- School – 31.1%
- Municipal – 53.8%
- County – 15.1%
Earlier this year, local voters overwhelmingly approved the Newark Public School District’s annual budget. The $1.2 billion budget will raise spending by $146 million. But instead of raising taxes, the local tax levy of $138 million will mean an $8.75 decrease for the average home with an assessed value of $175,000, according to figures presented by the board.

District administrators noted that Newark got more than $1 billion as part of Gov. Phil Murphy's school state aid proposal, an increase of 13.21 percent from last year. Read More: Newark Will Get More School Aid From NJ Under Murphy Plan
The total average residential property tax in Newark in 2021 was $6,811 for a home valued at $182,436. That was a $21 increase from 2020 – a difference of 0.31 percent.
