Newark Sees Power Outage: Some Classes Canceled At Rutgers

The power outage affected hundreds of Newark homes and businesses, a report says.

Newark, NJ – A portion of the campus of Rutgers-Newark was left without power Thursday morning, forcing the cancellation of classes in some of its buildings.

A power outage in the area that started around midnight also affected about 300 homes, businesses and St. Michael’s Hospital, according to RLS Media.

According to the university’s website, the outage is expected to last “at least through the daytime hours,” but because many buildings remain operational, administrators have cancelled classes only in the following academic buildings:

  • Aidekman
  • Boyden
  • Conklin
  • Life Sciences Center
  • Olson

The Dana Library also is closed, university officials added.

Classes in all other buildings will continue as usual, officials stated.

In addition, power was also out in the Woodward and Talbott residence halls, landline telephone service “may be affected,” and University Avenue between Bleeker and Warren Streets will be closed for the day to allow emergency crews to perform necessary repair work, administrators stated.
