Saint Michael’s In Newark Makes 2022 ‘Best Hospitals’ List

NEWARK, NJ — Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark was recently named to the 2022 Fortune/Merative “100 Top Hospitals” list, making it the only hospital in New Jersey that earned the honor this year.

This is the first time Saint Michael’s has been ranked on the national list published by Fortune magazine. The hospital ranked as one of the top performing teaching hospitals in the nation.

According to researchers:

“The organizations on this year’s 100 Top Hospitals and 15 Top Health Systems lists represent those that held up best against the pandemic’s ongoing stress test. They achieved better results than peer institutions on performance indicators intended to measure clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience, and financial health. The study, which for this year evaluated 2,650 U.S. hospitals, relies on publicly available Medicare data for its analysis. The Top Hospitals list also considers an organization’s contributions to its community and equity of care.”

Saint Michael’s CEO Alan Sickles said the hospital is “extremely honored” to have made this year’s list.

“Our entire team deserves credit for this recognition,” Sickles said. “They have worked diligently through the pandemic to provide the highest quality and safest care to our community.”

“We are proud of these accolades and will continue to work together to improve health care in Newark,” Sickles added.

The nod from Fortune/Merative isn’t the only recent national recognition that Saint Michael’s has earned.

In May, Saint Michael’s was awarded an A from the Leapfrog Group in the Spring 2022 Hospital Safety Grade – making it the only hospital in Essex County to earn the top grade from the independent national watchdog organization. And in March, Saint Michael’s was recognized by Healthgrades as a 2022 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient, which placed it among the top 5 percent of all short-term acute care hospitals as evaluated by Healthgrades.
