Several Injuries In Essex County Home Fire; FD Investigates Cause
Dozens of emergency responders battled a raging blaze that injured four firefighters and hospitalized two adults and a child in Essex County

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Dozens of Newark emergency responders battled a raging fire on South 18th Street that injured four firefighters and hospitalized two adults and a child on Tuesday. Newark authorities said that five people were rescued from the three-story home during the encounter.
About 70 firefighters responded to the 900-block of South 18th Street shortly before midnight to combat the blaze, which was put under control at 1:29 a.m., the Newark Department of Public Safety stated.
Authorities said that four firefighters suffered minor injuries in the conflagration. Emergency responders transported them to University Hospital for treatment; each have been released.

Firefighters rescued five people from the building. Two adults and a child were transported to St. Barnabas Hospital and University Hospital to be monitored for smoke inhalation. The other two victims declined medical attention, authorities said.
The American Red Cross relocated the affected residents, authorities stated.

The Arson Unit of the Newark Fire Division is investigating the cause of the fire, authorities said Tuesday.
