NEWARK, NJ — A shooting at a Chinese restaurant in Newark claimed the life of an 18-year-old resident on Sunday night, authorities said.

Deante Barr, 18, of Newark, was fatally shot at a restaurant on the 900-block of South Orange Avenue around 9 p.m., according to a joint statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Department of Public Safety.

Barr was pronounced dead at University Hospital in Newark at 10:57 p.m., authorities said.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is conducting an active investigation into the shooting.
