Shooting And Crash In Newark Puts 3 In Hospital, Knocks Out Power
A shooting and car crash in Newark hospitalized several people and knocked out power in the nearby neighborhood, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A shooting and car crash in Newark hospitalized several people and knocked out power in the nearby neighborhood on Monday morning, authorities said.
Newark police responded to the 700-block of Sanford Avenue at 3:04 a.m. after getting a report about a shooting. The officers found a man at the scene with a gunshot wound – although the location where the gunfire took place wasn’t immediately clear.

The wounded man was transported to University Hospital, where he is reportedly in stable condition.
Meanwhile, Newark firefighters got to work extracting two people who were trapped inside a motor vehicle that had crashed at the scene and flipped onto its side. One of the victims inside the vehicle was taken to University Hospital, and is also reportedly in stable condition, authorities said.

A light pole and transformer were knocked down in the collision, causing a power outage at Abinger Place from Silver Street to South Orange Avenue. PSE&G has been notified about the situation, authorities said.
The Newark Department of Public Safety issued an update with more details about the shooting and crash at 3:13 p.m.:
"At approximately 3:04 a.m. on Monday, April 1, police responded to the 700-block of Sanford Avenue on a call of a shooting. Responding officers located a male who had been shot. The victim was entrapped in a private vehicle that was transporting him to University Hospital for treatment. Before police arrived, the gunshot victim’s driver collided with another vehicle, causing responding officers to observe the vehicle lying on its side. The vehicle transporting the victim also struck a light pole and transformer, resulting in a localized temporary power outage. Newark firefighters extricated the male gunshot victim from the vehicle. Both he and the driver were transported to University Hospital for treatment and are reportedly in stable condition."
Authorities issued a third update shortly afterwards:
"A female (non-shooting victim) was located inside the vehicle. The male shooting victim, a male driver, and a female passenger were transported to University Hospital for treatment. All three victims are reportedly in stable condition."
A police investigation continues, authorities said. No additional information was immediately available.
