Shooting Near Prudential Center Was ‘Tragic, Isolated’: Newark PD

"There is no threat to our neighbors or visitors," the city's public safety director said.

NEWARK, NJ — A fatal shooting that took place near the Prudential Center in Newark on Sunday night was “tragic but isolated,” city officials said.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, police officers on patrol near the Prudential Center heard gunfire around 10:45 p.m. After arriving at the intersection of Mulberry and Green streets, the officers found a man with a gunshot wound.

Emergency responders transported the victim to University Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

No events were scheduled at the Prudential Center on the night of the shooting.

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said there was no threat to the community.

“This unfortunate incident occurred because the victim was targeted,” Ambrose said. “While learning that the victim succumbed to his injuries is heartbreaking, it’s clear that this shooting was intentional. There is no threat to our neighbors or visitors in the area where this incident occurred.”

The Essex County Homicide Task Force, which includes members of the Newark Police Division, is investigating the shooting. Anonymous tips can also be made using the Police Division’s website at www.newarkpd.org or through its smartphone app.
