Update: Snowstorm Expected In Newark (Here's What To Know)

Here are a few important things to keep in mind if the weather gets bad in Newark.

NEWARK, NJ — Snow is coming to Newark, forecasters say. And there are a few important things to keep in mind if the weather gets bad.

On Thursday, Newark Public Safety Director Brian O’Hara said that snow is predicted overnight with accumulations of between two to four inches possible. Snow is likely to begin after 1 a.m. and is expected to continue into Friday morning.

Newark city officials issued the following reminder about parking:

“All residents are asked to be mindful of the city’s “No Parking on Snow Covered Roads” regulations due to the expected snowfall. Signs have been posted on streets throughout the City of Newark to notify motorists of the streets designated for No Parking on Snow Covered Roads.”

Newark officials also reminded drivers to be careful if bad weather hits:

“Because motorists can become stranded by driving through flooded streets and high water, drivers are asked to avoid certain locations and to use alternative routes. Please click here for a list of streets to avoid due to flooding. This link can be found at the Department of Public Safety’s website: www.newarkpublicsafety.org.Click Police Division, Media Room and Weather. Please call: 973-733-6000 for non-emergency weather related matters. Dial 911 for emergencies.”

Mayor Ras Baraka urged residents to check on anyone who is limited or disabled, including elderly neighbors, children or anyone who may need assistance.

The Non-Emergency Help Center, (973) 733-4311, is available for the following:

  • No-parking areas during snowstorms
  • Lists of Snow Emergency Routes
  • To make Snow and Ice Complaints

Other reminders from Newark city officials include:

  • Home and property owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from all private residential and commercial property, including areas in and around driveways, sidewalks, and walkways. The City of Newark does not provide snow removal services to private property – residential or commercial property.
  • Do not throw snow into the street. Place the snow on your lawn, on the side of your home or in the rear of the property.
  • Park vehicles in your driveway, so that the plows can get through to remove snow and ice.
  • To report no heat or hot water in your apartment, call the Division of Code Enforcement at (973) 733-6471.
