South Korean Students Visit Newark High School, Make New Friends

Science Park High School students and staff recently welcomed a group of students from Science High School Busan, a prestigious magnet high school in South Korea. The visit marked the second collaboration between the two institutions to foster their global partnership in science and technology.

The visit aimed to provide students with hands-on opportunities for engaging in interactive science workshops, collaborative research projects, and cultural exchange sessions. Science Park students served as ambassadors, representing not only their school but also their city and country, as they guided their South Korean peers through the day’s activities.

Principal Darleen Gearhart expressed her enthusiasm about the exchange, emphasizing the value of global connections in education.

“Hosting Science High School Busan has been an incredible experience for our students. It not only allowed them to engage directly with peers from a different culture but also strengthened their passion for science and innovation,” said Principal Gearhart. “Our students are inspired to broaden their horizons and explore new ideas through this exceptional collaboration.”

“We want our students to learn international culture from a place across the world, and this exchange is just the first step,” said Vincent Nguyen, Department Chairperson of Science at Science Park High School. “We’re also working toward a long-term goal for students to eventually visit Science High School Busan in South Korea, which would allow them to further develop their leadership skills and broaden their understanding of international relations.

“This partnership is a testament to the power of education to connect people around the world. It’s incredible to see our students engage in scientific learning and build relationships that transcend cultural differences,” said Superintendent León. “These are the experiences that truly enrich their education and shape them into thoughtful global citizens.”

Board President Hasani K. Council also expressed his support for the exchange.

“It highlights the importance of such partnerships, and demonstrate how innovation and progress know no boundaries,” Council said. “In addition to academic growth, the exchange allows both schools to share best practices in teaching and learning, enriching the educational experiences of students and educators alike.”
