NEWARK, NJ — A new Sylvan Learning franchise location recently opened its doors near West Side Park in Newark. And its owner says she has plans to open another in the city.

LaRhonda Lewis, the owner of the education provider’s latest location at 740 South 18th Street, has nearly 30 years of experience in preschool education and counseling. It’s her first of two planned locations in the Newark area.

Prior to franchising with Sylvan, Lewis served as the director of two local preschool programs, where she developed relationships with the surrounding school districts. It’s her first foray into franchise ownership – but she’s confident that the building blocks for success are already there.

Lewis said that she hopes the newest Sylvan location will provide a crucial resource for the city: tutoring.

“There are significant changes happening in education driving a spike in demand for supplemental tutoring resources, especially in our community,” Lewis said.

“Students struggled to develop fundamental math and reading skills before the pandemic, and now those gaps are more exposed than ever,” she continued. “I am committed to ensuring that our students receive the necessary support and resources they need to excel in the Newark area, starting with my first location.”

Lewis got some words of encouragement from Sylvan as she embarks on her new journey into the business world.

“We’re proud to open our doors in Central Newark and provide a one-stop, all-subject resource to support students through every stage of their academic journey,” said John McAuliffe, CEO of Sylvan.

“Whether a student needs help catching up or advancing their skillset, Sylvan is here to help, and there is no one better to lead this center than LaRhonda,” McAuliffe said.
