Teen Victim Of New Year’s Shooting In Essex County Identified

A Newark teen died in a tragic East Orange shooting. Another teen was wounded. No arrests have been made, police said.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Authorities have identified the 18-year-old victim of a fatal shooting on New Year’s Day in East Orange as a Newark resident. Another victim in the tragic shooting – an 18-year-old female – is hospitalized in stable condition, police said Thursday.

Ibn Downey, 18, of Newark, passed away on Jan. 1, shortly after the new year, according to a joint statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the East Orange Police Department.

East Orange officers arrived on the 200-block of North 17th Street to find Downey fatally shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:06 a.m., authorities said.

A second victim, an 18-year-old female, was also wounded by gunfire. She sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized in stable condition, police said.
