Thanksgiving In Newark: Parking, Trash, Court, City Services
Here are some changes to city services in Newark to know ahead of the 2023 Thanksgiving holiday.
NEWARK, NJ — Non-emergency municipal services in Newark will be suspended on Thursday, Nov. 23 and Friday, Nov. 24 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Police, fire and other uniformed emergency services will be unaffected, the mayor’s office added.
Here are some other changes to city services for the holiday, officials said:
PARKING - Alternate side of the street parking will be suspended.

TRASH/RECYCLING - Curbside trash, street sweeping, and recycling collection will not be made on Thursday, Nov. 23. Trash will be picked up on Friday, Nov. 24 as regularly scheduled. Municipal garbage and paper recycling collection will resume in Zone A on Monday, Nov. 27. Residents must place their refuse at their curbs on that day, and pick-ups will be made as regularly scheduled.
COURT - The Municipal Court will also be closed on Thursday, Nov. 23, and on Friday, Nov. 24. However, a judge will be available to preside over bail hearings for defendants in custody on Nov. 23 and Nov. 24. Residents can make payments on parking and traffic tickets through the website www.njmcdirect.com. To utilize this website, residents will need their summons number, including the prefix, and the City of Newark’s court code, which is 0714.

OTHER SERVICES - The Department of Health and Community Wellness’s inspection services, transportation for seniors, and health clinic, will not operate on Thursday, Nov. 23 and Friday, Nov. 24. In addition, the Bureau of Vital Statistics will be closed on both days. Residents will not be able to apply for permits, birth certificates, name-change certificates, marriage licenses, nor pay water or tax bills at City Hall. However, the Medical Director and Department’s Division of Surveillance and Prevention are on call for medical and public health emergencies.
