Traffic Upgrades Coming To 17 Newark Intersections: Here’s Where

NEWARK, NJ — Essex County will be putting a landmark $46 million grant award to work upgrading intersections at 54 busy roads throughout the region, including several in Newark.

Last week, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. announced that the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) awarded the county two grants: one for $24.83 million and another for $21.73 million. It’s the largest safety-oriented award ever given by the NJTPA through its Local Safety Program, he noted.

The county will be using the money to modernize intersections in the following towns and cities:

• Newark – 17
• Irvington – 13
• East Orange – 10
• Bloomfield – 5
• Glen Ridge – 5
• South Orange – 2
• Maplewood – 1
• Belleville-Newark – 1

Here’s what is in store, according to a statement from DiVincenzo’s office:

“The needs of each intersection will be addressed. This includes, but is not limited to, new state-of-the-art traffic signal equipment, LED lights which shine brighter and are more energy efficient, new signage and roadway striping, back-up power to ensure signals begin working if there is an electrical failure, and a camera system to enable traffic signals along shared corridors to be synchronized to maximize traffic flow.”

The award of the grant allows Essex County to hire traffic engineers to review each intersection and create plans to upgrade them. Construction will commence after each plan is finalized, officials said.

“Our county roads are the lifeline for our residents and businesses, and making sure we have the most up to date equipment will make our roads more walkable and drivable, contribute to our quality of life and enhance property values,” DiVincenzo said.
