Ultra-Valuable Truffle Stash Passes Through Newark Airport For N.Y. Festival

More than 200 pounds of truffles valued at $600,000 passed through Newark Liberty International Airport en route to the 2016 festival.

NEWARK, NJ — It would have been a truffle-sniffing pig’s greatest dream come true.

To help prepare for the 2016 New York White Truffle Festival, which kicks off Saturday, Nov. 5 and includes several New York City area restaurants, Urbani Truffles and OTG recently transported more than 200 pounds of truffles valued at $600,000 through Newark Liberty International Airport.

The valuable fungus can fetch up to $150 an ounce and can reach up to five inches in diameter.

“Participating in New York’s White Truffle Festival has both our guests and crewmembers incredibly excited,” said OTG CEO Rick Blatstein. “We’re always looking for unique and fun ways to elevate the travel experience for our guests, and in partnering with Urbani, we’re able to do just that.”

According to a company news release, some of the truffles will be used by the six new restaurants in Terminal C at Newark Airport that plan to participate in the festival: Abruzzo Italian Steakhouse, Casciano’s, Caps Beer Garden, Wanderlust Burger Bar, Saison and DAILY.

Items on the participating restaurants' menus will include fresh lacquered Nantucket scallops with shaved truffles and foie gras cream, Amish free range chicken stuffed with burgundy black truffles and served with roasted root vegetables with truffle jus, manicotti-stuffed shells filled with ground veal and truffled ricotta and pan-roasted Rohan Duck Breast with fresh-shaved truffles.

OTG will also host truffle product tastings with Urbani at Abruzzo Market and United’s Miles Shop on Nov. 11, between 3 and 6 p.m.

“It’s exciting to have a collection of restaurants participate, each with their own unique style and take on how to use truffles in our dishes,” said Chef Mario Carbone. “Like at DAILY and Saison, we’ll incorporate fresh truffles and truffle products, not only into our menu at Abruzzo, a traditional steakhouse, but also at the more casual Casciano’s, where we’ll use truffle cream in our paninis.”
