For more than 100 years, the Urban League of Essex County has been a beacon of hope, empowerment, resilience, advocacy, and trusted resource by providing vital services that promote economic advancement and stability for families across Newark and the broader Essex County region. As the social, political, and economic tides shift with each passing decade, one thing remains constant: the Urban League’s unwavering commitment to uplifting underserved communities, advocating for equity, and building bridges to opportunity.

Founded during a time of deep racial and economic disparity, The Urban League of Essex County emerged as a crucial resource for families migrating north during the Great Migration. Today, in 2025, that same spirit of perseverance fuels the organization’s work. Amid growing challenges—from economic uncertainty and systemic inequality to housing instability and technological gaps—the League continues to serve as a trusted partner in progress by stand tall during these challenging times, just as they have for over a century

"Empowering Communities Through Vital Services" is at the heart of the Urban League’s mission, which boasts of a robust array of programs designed to promote economic advancement and stability. These services don’t just offer temporary solutions—they create sustainable pathways to success. From job training to early childhood education, the League is helping individuals and families build better futures.

Their programs create pathways to opportunity. The League’s core initiatives include:

  • Urban League Of Essex County Food Pantry: Many families have great concerns about where there next meal is coming from, not having access to sufficient food, or food of an adequate quality, to meet their basic needs. To address food insecurity, the Urban League of Essex County provides food assistance to residents in the Fairmount Heights community. Food distribution is every Thursday 12pm - 2pm at 513 Central
  • Housing Counseling and Foreclosure Prevention: Helping families navigate complex housing issues and avoid displacement through trusted guidance and support.
  • Affordable Housing Development: Addressing housing insecurity by developing and promoting access to safe, affordable homes.
  • Urban Seniors Job Program: Recognizing the needs of older adults, the League offers training and workforce re-entry support tailored to the senior community.
  • Workforce Development and Job Training: Preparing community members for gainful employment through skill-building, resume support, job placement assistance, and career coaching.
  • Urban Youth Reentry Program: A primary focus of the Urban League of Essex County's reentry efforts is to remove or reduce barriers to successful reentry, so that motivated individuals - who have served their time and paid their debt to society - are able to compete for a job, attain stable housing, support their children and their families, and contribute to their communities.
  • Financial Counseling and Economic Empowerment: Offering families and individuals the tools they need to gain financial literacy, reduce debt, and build wealth.
  • Early Childhood Education and Care: Ensuring our youngest learners are given a strong start, preparing them for academic success and lifelong learning.
  • Computer Science and Digital Literacy: Through its innovative Tech House, the League provides critical access to digital learning, coding education, and technology resources.
  • Youth Leadership and Empowerment Programs: Cultivating the next generation of leaders through mentorship, enrichment activities, and civic engagement.

In addition to their year-round services and programs, The Urban League of Essex County proudly host community events that Uplift, Inform, Inspire and Engage residents that both meet critical needs and celebrate the vibrancy of Newark and Essex County. These gatherings are a testament to the League’s belief in the power of connection, education, and unity including:

Urban League Tech House 7-Week Coding Bootcamp This immersive, Monday-to-Friday summer bootcamp is open to Essex County youth in grades 6–8 every year from July 7 to August 15, 2025 at the Urban League Tech House, 152 Littleton Avenue, Newark, NJ. It’s designed to do more than teach kids how to code—it empowers them to see themselves as future tech leaders. By building real digital skills, students gain confidence and career readiness in one of today’s fastest-growing industries.

24 Hours of PeaceAs part of the powerful, citywide “24 Hours of Peace” event, the Urban League proudly stands in solidarity with Newark’s efforts to promote peace and end violence. This overnight community event promoting peace, unity, and nonviolence across Newark is scheduled for Friday, September 5, 2025, at 8:00 PM, running continuously through to Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 8:00 PM on Springfield Avenue between Bergen and Blum Streets. It’s an overnight community experience that celebrates music, dialogue, and activism, proving that peace is not only possible—it’s powerful.

The Urban League Annual Gala – Hosted 6:00pm, Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at Nanina’s In The Park 540 Mill St, Belleville, NJ 07109, this elegant evening is more than just a fundraiser—it’s a tribute to the impact of community. The Annual Gala brings together donors, partners, leaders, and friends of the League to honor the year’s achievements and chart a bold course forward. It’s a night to celebrate the transformative work that uplifts thousands of lives.

Urban League Health Fair – Health is wealth—and they make sure our community has access to both. The Urban League’s Annual Health Fair taking place every July, brings vital health resources directly to the people, offering free screenings, wellness information, and access to local providers. It’s a life-saving event that puts preventative care within reach for all.

What makes The Urban League of Essex County unique is not just the services it provides—but the values it upholds. In every initiative, the League champions equity, inclusion, and dignity.
