Victim, 34, Dies In Newark Shooting; Probe Continues

Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a 34-year-old victim in Newark.

NEWARK, NJ — Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a 34-year-old victim in Newark on Monday.

Newark police officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Spruce Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard around 9 p.m., according to a joint statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Department of Public Safety.

Police found Michael Rutledge, 34, of Newark, lying on the sidewalk. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:27 p.m., authorities said.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to contact the task force at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.
