Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ) recently partnered with the Institute for Professional Education of Rutgers School of Law-Newark and other non-profits to present "The Nuts and Bolts of Representing Children in Special Education Matters." Based in Newark, N.J., VLJ provides comprehensive legal aid for economically challenged individuals and families. This program served as a primer for attorneys interested in taking on pro-bono special education cases through VLJ.

The panel of speakers addressed a range of topics including The Right to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), educational evaluations, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and substantive education rights. In addition, they discussed the due process of rights and procedures, rights in discipline proceedings, attorney's fee in special education matters, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

A state-wide 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, VLJ works to ensure fair and equal treatment within the legal system. Programs include free legal counsel and advice, educational seminars on various legal matters, and direct representation for at-risk individuals facing critical civil legal issues.
