Wave Of Shooting, Robbery Arrests In Newark; Dozens Apprehended

Dozens of suspects have been arrested in connection with shootings, robberies and other crimes that took place in Newark, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark police recently announced that dozens of suspects have been arrested in connection with shootings, robberies and other crimes that took place in the city.

The Newark Department of Public Safety released the following details about each arrest.

Terrel D. Dillahunt, 28, of West Orange, was arrested on January 11, 2024, as he was wanted in connection with a discharge of a firearm within the City of Newark that occurred on January 1, 2024, at University Avenue and Campbell Street. He faces weapon possession charges.

Antwan W. Sumpter-Robinson, 38, of Newark was arrested on January 19, 2024, through the Safe Surrender Program, as he was also wanted in connection with a discharge of a firearm within the City of Newark that occurred on January 1, 2024, at University Avenue and Campbell Street. He faces charges of aggravated assault, weapon possession, and certain persons prohibited from weapon possession.

Darion Canary, 31, of Jersey City, was arrested on January 12, 2024, in connection with a shooting that occurred on January 1, 2024, in the 900 block of Broad Street. Canary was arrested while in custody at the Essex County Correctional Facility. He faces charges of aggravated assault and weapon possession.

Gloria Gonzalez, 38, and Dante Brown, 31, both of Newark, were each arrested on January 21, 2024, in connection with an armed robbery that occurred that same day in the 100 block of Bloomfield Avenue. Brown attempted to rob three males walking in the area, a struggle ensued, and the firearm was discharged. Neither the suspect nor any of the victims were shot during the incident. Brown fled in a vehicle driven by Gonzalez. Each suspect is charged with aggravated assault and robbery.

Shukri Sharif, 41, of Newark, was arrested on January 17, 2024, in connection with a shooting that occurred on January 15, 2024, at Cypress Street near Fabyan Place. Police responded to a shots-fired notification in the area and observed surveillance video footage of three men shooting at each other. One suspect was seen exiting a Dodge Grand Caravan before shooting at another suspect. No injuries have been reported. Police conducted a motor vehicle stop of the Dodge Grand Caravan on January 17, 2024, and Shukri Sharif, the driver, was arrested. He faces charges of aggravated assault, weapon possession, and criminal mischief.

A 15-year-old male from Newark was arrested on January 20, 2024, at James Street and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in connection with a shooting that occurred that day at Halsey Street and New Street. Officers patrolling the area heard shots fired and received descriptions of suspects who were shooting at each other from concerned citizens. The 15-year-old suspect was located and found in possession of a 9mm ghost gun. A second handgun was located in an exterior stairwell in the 200 block of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. The suspect faces charges of aggravated assault, weapon possession, conspiracy, and firearm possession by a minor.

A 14-year-old male suspect from Newark was arrested on January 22, 2024, in the 200 block of Aldine Street following a shooting that occurred at that location that day. Police observed the suspect on surveillance video footage shoot a handgun at three individuals who ran westbound on Keer Avenue. No injuries have been reported, but Police observed property damage due to gunfire in the area. The 14-year-old faces charges of aggravated assault and weapon possession.

A 17-year-old male from Newark was arrested on January 26, 2024, in connection with a shooting that occurred on January 11, 2024, in the 300 block of South Orange Avenue. Two juvenile victims were shot while inside an establishment by a suspect who fled eastbound on South Orange Avenue. The 17-year-old, accompanied by a parent, surrendered to Police. He faces charges of aggravated assault, weapon possession, and firearm possession by a minor.

A 15-year-old male from Newark was arrested on January 29, 2024, in connection with a shooting that occurred on January 25, 2024, at Chester Avenue near Oraton Street. Police responded to the location on a call of shots fired. No injuries have been reported and no property damage due to gunfire was reported but Police observed surveillance video footage of three males walking eastbound on Chester Avenue when the driver of a white Jeep Wrangler turned onto Chester Avenue. After the driver exited his vehicle, he was observed engaged in a verbal exchange with the 15-year-old suspect, who began shooting at him. Police identified the 15-year-old and he was arrested while in custody in connection with a robbery. He faces charges of aggravated assault, weapon possession, and firearm possession by a minor.

ROBBERIES, OTHER CRIMES

Newark police said that eight adult suspects and six juveniles were arrested last month in connection with robberies and other crimes.

According to police, the list of arrestees, allegations and charges included:

  • Beverly Reed, 31, of Newark, was arrested for robbery at a discount store.
  • James M. Bryant, 45, of Newark, was arrested for aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon.
  • Tasha S. Simmons, 41, of Belleville, was arrested for robbery at a residence.
  • Abdul W. Rush, 50, of Orange, was arrested for robbery at a Dollar General Store.
  • Fernando G. Hernandez, 31, of Irvington, was arrested for robbing a victim of $1,000.
  • Kenyour D. Watson, 40, of Iselin, was arrested for receiving stolen property.
  • Sharod Jones, 27, of Newark, was arrested for robbery of New York Fried Chicken, a fast food restaurant.
  • Jacere E. Younger, 20, of Newark, was arrested for aggravated assault and carjacking.
  • Christopher Leake, 23, of West Orange, was arrested for robbing a victim of $400 and his personal belongings.
  • Quamid Johnson, 28, of Newark, was arrested for robbing a victim of his cell phone.
  • Alshaquan Brown, 34, of Newark, was arrested for unlawful possession of a weapon.
  • Tyrique Beard, 18, of Newark, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, and terroristic threats.
  • Jiequell Costa, 18, of Newark, was arrested for his involvement in an armed robbery.
  • A 14-year-old juvenile was arrested for his role in four robberies – a victim of $500, another victim’s wallet and cell phone. He also was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon.
  • A 15-year-old for his role in robbing a victim of his wallet and cell phone.
  • A 17-year-old juvenile for his role in robbing a victim of his vehicle
  • A 15-year-old juvenile for his role in robbing a victim of $200 and tools.
  • A 16-year-old juvenile was arrested for his role in two strong-armed robberies, where a victim’s $500 was taken.
  • A 14-year-old juvenile was arrested for his role in two robberies - a victim of $200 and his cell phone, and another victim of his cell phone and wallet.
  • A 14-year-old juvenile for theft of a vehicle and resisting arrest.
