Weequahic HS Students Awarded $48K in Scholarships

Thirty-two students receive $1,500 each for college or trade school

Thirty-two deserving Weequahic High School students received $48,000 in scholarship money last Friday evening during the Weequahic High School Alumni Association's 2011 Scholarship Celebration Dinner.

Weequahic school faculty and the association's board of trustees gave a $1,500 scholarship to each student for college or trade school at the annual dinner held at the Solid Rock Baptist Church in Irvington.

Phil Yourish, executive director of the alumni association, touted the organization for being one of the best in the country.

"During the past 14 years we have raised nearly one-half million dollars for scholarships. And we have become one of the largest, most active and most successful high school alumni organizations in the country," said Yourish in a statement.
