Women in Sports: Accessibility and Inclusion including captioning, ASL

Has been a huge women sports fan and advocate and make sure to have live captions on scoreboards or ribbon boards during women sports games in my metropolitan area.

Always receive the support and love most from women sports talented and kind staffs in leadership. They helped me so much with getting accessibility and inclusion such as captioning, American Sign Language (ASL) communication technology during both men’s and women sports games.

Always attend women sports games in person and watching TV, not sure if all pro and college sports venues in United States post live captions on their scoreboards or ribbon boards or giant hung video scoreboard during women sports games.

Yes, we have for anthem captioning most of time. Yes, we have live captioning if they share same sports venues with men’s sports teams that they host home games in general. Some women sports venues have live captioning boards on their own but more is needed.

USWNT, WNBA, NWSL and other social media platforms such as Facebook have captioning but more is needed.Not sure, how many are out there. Probably few and some by now. The need for more.

There is a new accessibility advertisement such as mobile captioning QR code scan so this allow fans to know how to use their apps on their mobile device, log in and view mobile captioning and this need for women sports captioning as well.

US open tennis center will have a QR Code code message on the Grandstand video board this year

Madison Square Garden, Prudential Center and UBS arena already had a QR code advertisement on the video board for the men sports teams

Live captioning are available for women sports games and/or women sports empowerment events

1. Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Flushing NY (US open tennis)

2. Red Bull arena, Harrison NJ (NJ/NY Gotham FC pro women soccer NWSL, She Believe Cup, USWNT)

3. Jersey Mike Arena Rutgers Athletic Center (Rutgers women basketball NCAA)

4. Prudential Center - Newark NJ such as women NCAA basketball games

5. Madison Square Garden NYC - women pro hockey game and women sports empowerment night

6. UBS arena Belmont Park NY, Citi Field, Flushing NY, New York Yankees stadium, Bronx NY, Met Life stadium, East Rutherford NJ and other sports venues

Barclays Center, Brooklyn New York

Barclays Center in Brooklyn NY house the NY Liberty, pro women basketball, WNBA and Brooklyn Nets, pro men basketball NBA plan to have live captions rollout on their scoreboards or ribbon boards sometime this coming October 2023. Keep our finger crossed that we will have live captions ready this coming Fall 2023.

Barclays Center already have anthem and theme celebration captioning on their giant hung video score board and will start mobile captioning QR code scan advertisement this coming Fall 2023.

Barclays Center expect to host NY Liberty women pro basketball awareness day in 2024.

The office of Big East conference, NCAA expect to have ASL signers in the national anthem for Big East women basketball tournament at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut in March 2024 (championship game)

Rutgers Athletics and marketing consider to have ASL signers in the national anthem for Rutgers women softball and basketball game in 2024

The work is not being done as the need for American Sign Language (ASL) or Deaf awareness day for women sports games in metropolitan area as well.

Continue to advocate ASL communication technology where ASL signers deliver public address announcement message including game, referee and other details plus in game contests, activities and more can be seen on the video score board in the stadium and arena

Gary Noll who was born deaf and grew up in a deaf household, received a 2019 New Jersey State Governor’s Jefferson Award for Public Service and 2017 New Jersey Association of the Deaf unsung hero award for his advocacy on behalf of sports accessibility, awareness, diversity and inclusion in metropolitan. Noll also advocate and provide guidance on American Sign Language (ASL) during the national anthem, group performances, public announcements and other hosting duties on video score board Noll also raised ASL and Deaf awareness event in NJ and metropolitan sports arena and stadium.
