The festival kicked off with performances by Taekwondo teams from the New York/New Jersey area, and the level was very impressive. The energy in the auditorium was electric as high-flying Taekwondo practitioners showed off their acrobatic board breaking techniques, upbeat choreographies and self defense techniques. Following the local performances, was an awards ceremony, in which Team Black K presented the leadership of the K-Tigers with appreciation awards and likewise the K-Tigers presented the leadership of the performing schools with plaques and certificates.
Once the awards ceremony was over, it was time for the main event. Team Black K started off performing Giriu, a smooth flowing Taekwondo choreography to traditional Korean music, followed by the Marionette performance and a modified version of BTS’ Idol. In between choreographies, the athletes performed high level acrobatic board breaking techniques. Following the Black K performance came the much anticipated K-Tigers, who brought over 25 performers of varying ages straight from South Korea. The K-Tigers performance was stunning, starting with the entire team performing perfectly synchronized Taekwondo movements, followed by various group and individual performances.

The K-Tigers are famous for fusing traditional Taekwondo motions with popular K-pop songs and choreographies. They have pioneered a new way of presenting Taekwondo demonstrations, having evolved their routines with the growing global popularity of K-pop. The show ended with back to back patriotic choreographies, Black K performed to the US National Anthem and joined the K-Tigers for a stunning performance of Taehan Min’guk (the traditional Korean name for South Korea). But, that was not enough, the crowd chanted for an encore, and the K-Tigers did not upset, with a Taekwondo adaptation of the popular BTS song Boy with Luv. This was without a doubt, an unforgettable day.
