Young Newark Students Hold Science Fair For Black History Month

NEWARK, NJ — Some of Newark’s youngest students recently celebrated Black History Month with a school science fair.
Dozens of students at KIPP SPARK Academy presented their own innovations, inventions or research on a historical Black innovator before a crowd of their peers, educators and families.
“We celebrated Black History Month through invention because so many everyday items we use were created by Black innovators,” said Gia Bethea, a science teacher who organized the event.

“This was a way to honor their contributions while inspiring the next generation of creators,” Bethea said. “I hope the students who participated go home feeling empowered to keep experimenting, inventing and pushing their ideas forward.”
