The fire broke out at 6:10 a.m. Monday in a home on the 200 block of Delavan Street, according to the New Brunswick fire department.
It is a three-story home and the woman, in her 80s, owned the home. She lived on the second and third floors and rented out the first floor, NJ.com reported.
The fire started on the top floors where she lived. It was an aggressive fire that rose to third-alarm status, said the fire department, which described conditions inside the home as "challenging hoarding conditions."
Firefighters searching the home during the fire found the woman and she was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
