NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Rutgers students returned to their off-campus housing after midnight Friday night to find the home had been broken into, things inside were destroyed and someone tampered with natural gas outlets inside the home, presumably the gas stove.
The off-campus housing is located on Hamilton Street near Easton Avenue.
None of the Rutgers students were injured, but it is being investigated as an attempted arson, said Rutgers campus police.
The New Brunswick Police Department asks that anyone with information, or who may have been in the area at the time, contact the NBPD's Detective Bureau at (732) 745-5217.
Also, there were two attempted car thefts and two break-ins to cars that happened in close proximity between 11:30 p.m. Friday, October 17 and 9 a.m. Saturday, in Lot 711 (33 Dudley Road) and Lot 82 (University Inn and Conference Center, 178 Ryders Lane).
The victims, both affiliated with Rutgers and not, said they parked their cars in lots 711 and 82. Upon returning to their vehicles, they discovered damage to their vehicles and missing personal property. Nobody was injured and no cars were stolen.
